My advice is not to write for any particular publication. Do not try to choose words or subjects you think that they will publish. Just write what you are thinking about, what you are feeling, write for yourself, and when you finish writing whatever was on your mind, then and only then find a publication that you think this story will fit in and send it to them.
100% agree. I am not averse to submitting to publications, but I write for me first and then ask, "Is this a good fit for any pubs I know?" I'm willing to do minor rewrites to fit the pub's tone and audience, but I am not willing to change the essence of who I am as expressed in print.
