How could they do this to me? If that’s the thought you’ve been having over and over, this article is for you.

Someone’s been going behind your back saying terrible, untrue things about you to your friends, your family, your coworkers. It may seem like they’re trying to pull your reputation right out from under you like a rug, leaving you with nothing.

If so, you may be the victim of a narcissistic smear campaign.

Last year I wrote 3 People to Know If You’re a Victim of a Narcissistic Smear Campaign. Reader Beaches recently asked a very good question in a comment: Is there a survival guide to help victims get through a smear campaign with only minimal damage?

Well, yes and no. I can’t give you a playbook like a football coach might give his team. I can’t give you rules like, “If they say A, you do B,” “If they do C, you do D,” and so on.

What I can do is give you a set of guidelines. These will be easy to understand intellectually, but a little harder to internalize emotionally. If you can internalize these guidelines, though, you will sap the narcissist of much of their power.
