A microblog is a digital publication that covers a specific neighborhood of a city. It isn’t financially or logistically feasible for traditional media to have that narrow a focus — but it can be for you, and the rewards can be great.

I’ve been writing a microblog about my neighborhood for 20 years. It has won Best Blog in the city’s arts & entertainment newspaper 4 times and was a runner-up 3 additional times.

My blog is in written form, but most of what I talk about here could be extrapolated to a different format such as TikTok or YouTube.

Why start a neighborhood microblog?

What are the rewards? I’ll share my experience:

You can become a local celebrity

It’s pretty cool to walk into just about any local business and people are excited about to see you. “Hey, Paul, thanks for writing about our New Year’s promotion. Several people came in and said they read about it on your blog. We’re thinking about adding cherry pie to the menu — could we get you to be our taste tester?”
