Our service industry people are in an impossible position. The city I live in is currently under a Safer at Home order. However, with inadequate government assistance to keep businesses open and money in furloughed employees’ wallets, restaurants have been allowed to stay open for indoor dining at 25% capacity.

On New Year’s Eve — a night when a server might be expected to take home $800 in tips — they were lucky to walk away with $150.

On Wednesday night trivia — when $150 would be a typical take — they might end the night with $32.

They’re not making enough to pay the rent and the bills. Yet because the restaurants are still open at 25%, they were never furloughed and can’t collect unemployment.

I have many friends in the service industry and I worry about them.
