When I was about 5, there was a little evergreen tree growing in the side yard. It was about two feet tall. Wanting to display my 5-year-old power, I kicked at it and shoved it and threw dirt on it. Finally, I accomplished my mission. The little green tree turned brown and died.

Today I’m listening to Oprah interview Eckhart Tolle. He says that one of the ways to find the eternal in you is to observe a tree for a period of time — to feel its stillness, and then realize that stillness is also within you.

I’m sorry, tree. I was so young. I had no idea there was something valuable I was supposed to learn from you.

I would give anything to bring you back.
